Foundation Program

Wednesdays 7:00-10:00 p.m. at Atisha Buddhist Centre, 1823 Gerrard Street East, Toronto

Many practitioners have a sincere wish to deepen their knowledge and experience Buddhist teachings and gain authentic spiritual realizations through a structured program of studies. The Foundation Program is a systematic study program designed to fulfill this wish.

The Foundation Program provides:
  • a systematic presentation of the basic subjects of Mahayana Buddhism
  • the perfect basis for a strong daily practice
  • the support of a spiritual community
  • the complete path to enlightenment
  • presents Buddhist teachings in a form that is easy to understand and put into practice.

Currently we're studying How to Understand the Mind.

What are the benefits of a systematic study program?
Buddhism teaches that to find lasting happiness and meaning in our lives we need to follow a spiritual path. To follow this path it is important to have a qualified Teacher who can offer us advice and encouragement, pure Dharma teachings, and a strong spiritual community who provide good conditions for our practice. These help us to penetrate more deeply into the meaning of Buddha's teachings, engage in sincere and regular study, and maintain a daily meditation practice that is both focused and powerful.

Through regular teachings and meditation, systematic study, and discussion, the Foundation Program offers this spiritual support. Its special quality is that we can gain authentic experience without abandoning our modern lifestyle. By studying in this program we will gain great confidence in the methods for transforming the mind - from basic techniques for overcoming our everyday problems, to practices leading to permanent inner peace and unsurpassed happiness.

How does the Foundation Program work?
The secret of the Foundation Program's success lies in the manageable commitment which participants undertake. Students sign up for a section of the book and commit themselves to attend every class, to learn the material, to attend a puja once a week, and to take a test.

The class is offered once a week in Toronto: Wednesdays 7:00-10:00 pm at Atisha Buddhist Centre.

How much does it cost?
Fees are $75 per month to attend the Foundation Program in Toronto,  (4 hours/week). All General Program classes are free for FP students.
